Seaside boulders

18/02/18

Arrived early morning to light drizzle at ’The thirlstane’. Beautiful sea views in an atmospheric little cove.

Plenty of rock to go at of reasonable grade. Initially struggled to find some dry rock. The warm up wall was useful before getting into the cave to tackle the problems.

The west roof proved the driest spot and the most entertainment for the session.

‘Bad sneakers – 6a’ was climbed along with ‘Easy roof – 5’. attempts were made at ‘Nitro – 7a+’ and ‘Jihad – 7a’ but far too difficult in poor conditions.

The drizzle did stop and was very pleasant in a sheltered little spot. Some scrambling up to the top of the cliff finished the session, with the problems towards the front of the cave too wet to work. Pleasant views across to the lake district.

With the weather clearing up I drove up the coast to Garheugh. With persistent drizzle here it made working the problems hard going. Would be a brilliant location in the sun. Not much shelter here from the wind either.

Ascent of ‘Missing rib – 5+ and Broken rib – 5+’. A lot of time spent on ‘Life is beautiful – 6b’ but couldn’t get my feet to stick on the last move.

Also a failed attempted was made of the only other patch of dry(ish) rock on the blunt arete ‘Curmudgeon – 7c’

A fun day with a two good bouldering sessions in that would be fantastic locations in the sunshine. Watch the video HERE.

  • This video has been changed in the upload/download process, original footage lost. Cut all of Garheugh off and the best parts of Thirlstane. Had a really good video of all these problems and some good moments of linking moves together etc – gutted at the lost footage! Video therefore not very good.
