Frozen lakes and frozen turf

  • Weekend of 2nd Feb.
  • Stayed in Club hut in Braithwaite.
  • No video as forgot to take GoPro on the trip.

Walked up Grisedale pike in brilliant sunshine and still air on Friday to have a look at snow conditions and perhaps traverse into a snow gully on the north side to climb. Snow very thin, descended via northern ridge into Whinlatter forest and back to Braithwaite.

Saturday was spent at Great end, long approach where it began to snow as we moved into the clouds. Very poor visibility and soon in soft snow. Would have attempted Central gully but fears of the top ice pitch not being in condition we opted for Window gully. I led Chris up all pitches, the best being a mixed chimney. Nav on top with strengthening wind, in white out conditions we came down via Styhead tarn.

Sunday was a trip to Red tarn cove on Helvellyn. I led the first and third pitches on V-corner. First was a stepped ice fall and the third was an ice pitch in board-line condition. Topped out over a small cornice and came back along striding edge. Amazing sunset whilst half way over stridging edge after a day of clear sunny skies with a gentle breeze.
